The Colour of 'Cross
23 October 2013
Plank barriers at cyclo-cross races are frequently utilitarian - they are the difficult obstacles for the racer to negotiate. Race organisers may also apply logos from sponsors or perhaps even words of encouragement to the racers.
At the NorCal CX San Jose Cougar races, the Murphy Mack-led crew chose to paint a set of plank barriers in colours of the sponsoring team, Superpro Racing.
The yellow, pink, and blue barriers, of course, became a photo-opportunity to capture racers from that team.
In the end, this photograph of Keith Hillier, racing in kit from Team Rambuski Law, provided an appealing image.
Unlike the photograph from the recent post The Art that is 'Cross, this image has a certain sterility with the lack of grit and grime of a true muddy cyclo-cross race.
Nevertheless, this racing action is another representation of the unique sport of cyclo-cross. The racer is suspended in mid-air, by the still-photograph, carrying his bike. And there is that synergy of colours...right down to Hillier's shoes.
